It Happened One Night

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The dialogue in “It Happened One Night” is quick, smart, unapologetic, romantic, and sensual all in one. Sexuality was often seen in earlier films and is still seen today, but at the time when this film was released there was a rise in censorship in the movie industry. Women were constantly portrayed as quick to fall under the spell of the male hero in every film, but the screwball comedy illustrated women who could take care of themselves without the security of a man, or so it seems at first. To sum everything up, “It Happened One Night” played a pivotal role in the progression of film as an art form.

2) Find a related article and summarize the content.

This article shows us that Myrna Loy turned down the role of Ellie Andrews because a recent film set on a bus had failed, and she didn't think that this one would succeed.  I found this interesting because i can only imagine how different the movie would have been if Myrna Loy ended up acting in the film opposed to Ellie Andrews.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.

This article applies to our class because we have been talking about the history of Ellie Andrews and how she was the perfect actress to be chosen to perform in this piece. In my opinion, I think the entire dynamics of the film would have been changed if Myrna Loy was choosen to act.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film

The cinematography stood out as expertly filmed, one shot that really stuck with me was Clark Gable in the telephone booth drunk telling off his boss towards the beginning of the movie. The way the camera is positioned looking down on him gives off hints that Clark’s character is small and it’s true that when he meets Ellie he is at a low point in his life. I also thought the love connection between Ellie and Peter was strong, engaging, and believable. Overall an absolute masterpiece.

The Gold Rush (1925)

1. Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

We as a class discussed alot about the great Charlie Chaplin. Seeing him act in a 1925 film I must say that this man is extraordinarily talented and had more talent than most actors in this era. The movie was perfectly edited together with wonderful use of parallel editing along with showing a great deal of emotion ranging from happiness (When Charlie and Big Jim finally came across food), sadness (Georgia not showing up to the New Years Eve Feast) and also Suspense (Leaving the audience guessing when Georgia and Charlie were going to meet after she didn't show up to the New Years Dinner).

Though the movie was released in 1925 it cost roughly around a million dollars to create the masterpiece. The movie turned to be a huge hit and grossed around Six Million in Sales! 6 Million back in 1925 is a tremendous amount it money.

2.   Find a related article and summarize the content

http://www.cinelinx.com/editorial/item/3429-the-300-greatest-films-ever-made-part-24.html

According to Cinelinx "The Gold Rush" was ranked number 61 of all time greatest films ever made. In my opinion, I personally think it should be a little higher than 61. Nonetheless, still a hefty spot for a silent film (Link posted above).

3. Apply the article to film screened in class.

As mentioned before this film should of been ranked much higher than it was because as talked about in class this film paved the way for many future films, in terms of, editing and also special effects. In my opinion it should of been ranked in the upper 40 interval just because the effort put into a silent film and making it understandable without the luxury of sound.

4.  Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion,  formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article

The year this masterpiece was made was 1925 and the creativity level that was put into this film is unexplainable. There still are some film editing skills used in this film that are used today in our "computerized filled era". What would I call it? Just some good ol' Innovation. This film showed creating a path for future films to follow. Everything from Film Structure, Effects, Editing Tactics to even something simple .. Closeups! Just the diamond standard for Film History.
